Life imprisonment in breach of human rights – ECHR

With 16 votes and one against, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that life imprisonment is in breach of human rights. Judges declared that persons sentenced for life ought to have the possibility of release and of sentence review, to be compatible with their human rights. Discussions were sparked after a man accused of murder, Jeremy Bamber, was sentenced to life imprisonment. Thirteen persons in Malta are currently serving life imprisonment sentence. Last month, Gozitan, David Zerafa was handed a life sentence.
