Nearly 150 people attended a reception in Edmonton, Alberta Canada to celebrate the official opening of the Consulate Offices in Edmonton and to welcome newly appointed Honorary Consul Victor Tanti. Mr. Tanti, a Maltese ex-patriot welcomed numerous dignitaries to the lively event including Alberta Minister of Culture the Honorable Heather Klimchuk – who brought greetings on behalf of the Premier and the Government of Alberta—as well as the Mayor of Edmonton, His Worship Mayor Stephen Mandel.
In support of the occasion, Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. George Vella provided a letter acknowledging the official opening and welcoming Victor Tanti to his post. The letter was read to the crowd by Tanti’s son Elliott, a third year Honors political science student at the University of Alberta.
Although the number of Maltese people in the province of Alberta is small, Tanti hopes that the establishment of this Consular office will help to serve as a common point for people of Maltese heritage.
Part of the work of the Honorary Consul is to promote Malta as a tourist destination and in his speech to the guests at the reception, Tanti asked invitees to add Malta to their bucket
list of places to see. “Few countries are as rich in beauty and history as Malta,” said Tanti to an appreciating crowd. Relatively unknown to Canadians, Tanti has already begun to
promote Malta to numerous Canadian media outlets as a spectacular tourist destination. “I am hopeful that this work will reap great promotional dividends for Malta’s tourism sector,”
said Tanti.
