A separated 50 year-old man, whose partner is expecting a child was granted bail after pleading not guilty to charges of aggravated theft. Inspector Sandra Zammit explained how early yesterday morning, Carmelo Gauci, who resides at Qawra, stole a Samsung Galaxy tablet from inside a Toyota Vitz parked in Triq it-Turisti, in his town of residence. The tablet was later located by its owner through a software programme and the  information passed to the police. It was given to its rightful owner after being retrieved from the accused's car. Looking visibly shaken, Gauci told Magistrate Depasquale that if the case is not a serious offence he does not need a lawyer. The Magistrate replied that theft is not an everyday frivolous occurrence and appointed Dr Mark Mifsud Cutajar as legal aid. The court noted how Gauci's criminal record included various theft related convictions. The accused told investigators how when he saw the tablet could not resist the temptation of taking it. Gauci held he works as a delivery man and has another two jobs and works very hard. His other two jobs include door to door delivery in the evening and killing chickens between 11pm and 4 am. Magistrate Francesco Depasquale granted bail to the accused on condition that he signs at the Qawra police station three times a week and a personal guarantee of €5000.
