56-year-old nurse Jane Carabott, filed a judicial protest against the Superintendent for Public Health and the Chief Medical officer, claiming damages.
Carabott claimed that for 15 years she carried out her duties at Fairyland Ward at St Luke's Hospital. However in 2008 she was transferred to the medical clinic at the Malta International Airport. The nurse claimed she was informed of the unreasonable transfer in an irregular and informal way. The airport administration were not informed of her transfer and Carabott started reporting for work without having the necessary pass and clearance to access her working place.
Seven months down the line, nurse Carabott was transferred to Mount Carmel Hospital. She claimed that at Mt Carmel Hospital she was subjected to unacceptable work conditions and was never informed of the true reasons behind her transfers.
Through the intervention of MUMN and following the decision of the Ombudsman, the nurse was transferred back to The airport's clinic a year later. Upon her return, the nurse was allegedly abused by her colleagues and superiors in both physical and psychological ways. This led to a case being filed with the NCPE after she claimed she was sexually harassed by a fellow doctor.
The nurse demanded that the Chief Medical Officer and the Superintendent of Public Health take the necessary steps to address her rights and pay her damages.
Dr Roberto Montalto signed the judicial protest.
