British Prime Minister David Cameron is scheduled to hold ‘war talks’ at Downing Street today as military commanders draw up plans for missile strikes against Syria. Mr Cameron will chair a meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) after insisting the West must not "stand idly by" in the wake of Syria's suspected chemical attack. In talks by telephone last night with US president Barack Obama, the two leaders agreed that "all the information available confirmed a chemical weapons attack had taken place", said a Downing Street spokesperson. "They both agreed they were in no doubt that the Assad regime was responsible," added the spokesperson. Meanwhile the Government of Malta issued a statement expressing shock at the recent developments in Syria where hundreds of civilians, mainly women and children were decimated in chemical attacks. The government of Malta said that the use of such weapons is prohibited through international conventions and condemned the use of chemical warfare in hostilities. The statement noted that there is no final proof that the chemical attacks were used by the governing regime of Bashar al Assad; however circumstantial evidence points in that direction. Noting the reactions of the international community, the statement adds that it is a pity that there does not seem to be consensus in the UN Security Council as to the appropriate reaction in this case characterized by cruelty and brutality. Government appealed to the UN Security Council to agree on an appropriate reaction to deliver a message that these atrocities are not acceptable. The statement said that Government will be following the developments closely.
