Malta signs double taxation agreement with the Ukraine

Prime Minsiter Joseph Muscat, Ukranian President Victor Yanikovich and Prime Minsiter Mykola Azarov discussed bilateral relations and concluded a double taxation agreement during a short visit which the Maltese Premier paid today in this former Soviet republic which borders the Black Sea. The double taxation agreement and bilateral talks were held in the Ukranian Capital, Kiev. Ukranian PM Azarov expressed the hope that the co-operation between the two countries will strenghten and persist over time. He said that there is much room for expansion in the bilateral relations in areas such as tourism and trade. He said that trade with Malta will be given priiority and he welcomed any Maltese wishing to invest in his country. Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and Ukranian President Victor Yanikovich met earlier and discussed briefly the double taxation agreement which was signed in the afternoon by the two countries. The Maltese Premier described the agreement as a positive step in the relations between the two countries. He said that as a member of the EU, Malta wants to maintain the best relations possible with third countries. Dr Muscat said that Malta will back Ukrainia’s bid for an association agreement with the EU in the coming November. He observed that the pending judicial reform in Ukraine may hinder the smooth processing of this association agreement. He expressed the hope that these will be ironed out in time. Dr Muscat also had discussions with the Council for Defence and National Security and witht he Presidential Co-Ordinator for the integration process of Ukraine in the EU. Diplomatic relations between Malta and the Ukraine started formally in 1991 and the two countries currently co-operate on the levels of tourism, health and the financial sector. In 2008 the two countries signed a co-operation agreement for the fight against organised crime.
