Opposition leader Simon Busuttil asked this evening who had determined the share price used by the government to sell a 20% stake of Enemalta to a Chinese state-owned company. Dr Busuttil said that considering the fact that the new planned power plant was to be foreign owned, the generation of electricity in Malta would be in the hands of foreigners. He said that the partial privatisation of the utility corporation went against the electoral promises of the Labour Party.
PN leader questioned whether it was in the country's strategic interest to sell part of Enemalta and whether this would mean another country would determine Malta's energy generation. What, queried the PN leader, would China be getting in return for its stake?
PL reaction
Reacting to Dr Busuttil’s statements, the Labour Party issued a statement saying that government is fulfilling its mandate to save and create jobs. It said that he previous PN administration had brought Enemalta to the edge of bankruptcy and it seemed, continued the PL, that the PN wanted to leave the corporation in the same situation. The PL said that the PN Leader is placing jobs at risk, is against investment and against clean air technology.
