The GWU today protested formally agains the employment of persons in what it describes as a 'precarious mode'. The union is taking a strong stand against this form of employment which is abusive and essentially means that the employee works at less than the minimum established conditions.
At a press conference, GWU Secretary General Tony Zarb said that the cleaning staff at Boffa hospital are employed in such a manner. He said that the employees had reported to the union when the employer of the cleaning staff, Gafa Cleaning Services, not only failed to give the overtime worked for but also indicated that he would be willing to replace these workers by others, including immigrants, if they did not comply to his conditions. Mr Zarb said that this was unacceptable.
