Minister for Health Dr Godfrey Farrugia and Parliamentary Secretary for EU funds Ian Borg today visited the Oncology centre, currently being constructed in the precincts of Mater Dei Hospital. The project is funded by the EU. The site, which used to serve as an unofficial car park, was always earmarked as an area for the future extension of Mater Dei Hospital. The second and third phase of this project will cater for chemotherapy facilities, an outpatient’s area, a Phlebotomy Unit, administration offices, a cafeteria, the construction of a new helicopter pad and a plant room. While facilities for the treatment of cancer in Malta are currently housed at Sir Paul  Boffa Hospital, these medical services will be shifted to this new oncology centre once works are completed. Although an alternative site for the oncology centre had been assessed, a comparative analysis conducted by the applicant, concluded that the most feasible and equitable option was to set up the new center at Mater Dei Hospital. The design of the building will reflect the existing architecture of the hospital. [gallery ids="39599,39598,39597"] [gallery ids="39599,39598,39597"]
